Hello, I wasn't sure if this was already asked but I was just wondering why there are a certain amount of characters allowed in the signature. I'm sorry if this is a stupid question.

Because otherwise somebody could have a signature that could take up pages and pages of the screen.... I know it's an extreme example. And apparantly, with HTML, you can practically post an entire bulletin board in your signature.
It can be annoying, yes, but it's to prevent abuse and stuff.

Yeah. It's a bit annoying though when what you want to put in is small, but happens to have long urls. I remember when I used to count my SI-free time very precisely with Naked_Dave's purple badges, whenever I got to a stage where 4 or 5 of those were needed, plus my imood, it would start complaining, even though my sig wasn't large to look at or large in terms of filesize I don't think.

You can just ignore me if you want with this question but I just wondered if there is any way if you can expand the signature size by like a few more characters? lol, I'm sorry for being a pain. I was just curious.

No, it's not possible, I've asked before....
It's amazing what you can do though. Trim a few spaces here and there, if possible, upload images to a shorter URL, delete a few emoticons, and you can make space.

there's a great site called tinyurl.com that will take a huge url and reduce it to just a few characters. the links it makes are permalinks, too.
as far as signatures, i'm getting tired of fighting the batle to get people to put reasonably sized images int heirs. i don't want to not allow pictures at all, but people are ignoring the request we make that you keep pictures no bigger than 4-5k. i know that doesn't seem like much to a lot of you, but i've been on recently via dialup and it was painfully slow. some poeple also get chragfed for their dial-up based on how much data they download, so huge filesizes are costing them moey. to me, that's an evenbigger problem than thenm being too wide or whatever.

Totally agree about filesize - when I first got dialup I even tried disabling images on my browser... but then all the important buttons like "Post reply" weren't there
There is a sig-free theme though, isn't there? I think it's Icicle maybe, can't remember.

yeah, there are two:
MS Simplicity -- light, doesn't have signatures in posts
BBTech -- dark, doesn't have signatures in posts
Appalachia and another one (fionefour? i forget) don't show you how many people have read a post; they just show replies.
people can use those themes if they want to, but i'd still like us to be more courteous about our sigs.

In profile it's saying I can only have 5 lines in my sig, and that's with the bbcode and html thingy, so I basically can just about get the link and a one line quote in my siggie =(

i've changed it to 7 lines. also, you can only have two images in a sig. i really don't want to turn all signature images off, but if i can't get people to use smaller images any other way it might happen.

Either my images are turned off or there's something wrong with my code to display my imood. At the very least, it should display the little "image unavailable" box... Can it be reactivated?

i changed the [img][/img] tags to <img src="foo"> and it seems to have worked. odd; i'm not sure why it didn't like the bbcode.

The avatar size will always be there if you right click on it, then choose Properties. If it says "Not available" then wait for it to load, and try again. It should be there. I can't think of any reasons why it wouldn't be.

Kinda stupid question.
I wanted to post a small link to my place in my siggy, yet it said (if I recall correctly) that my avatar and sig took up too much space. Yet even if I delete my entire sig, it still won't allow it. Any thoughts?
